We are hiring at all levels (BSc, MSc, PhD) for a range of positions. If you are interested in applying, please read through the following open positions, and apply using the form below. While the form is preferred, you are also welcome to inquire about any of the positions via email.
- Postdoc: We are hiring for a fully funded PostDoc position, with emphasis on building new computational approaches for scientific inference in the life sciences.
- PhD Students: We have multiple fully funded positions (3+1 years) available at Helmholtz Munich for four years. PhD topics are not pre-specified, and any application for topics that fits into the lab direction is encouraged. Co-advising (e.g. through ELLIS) is also possible.
- Research Engineers: We recruit a research engineer to support executing and scaling research projects, and to improve our open source code bases. Minimum requirements: MSc or very good BSc in a related discipline (engineering science or computer science), demonstrated programming experience (e.g. through Github projects).
- Research Visits: We have funding available for short-term research visits at all levels (undergraduate, Master’s, PhD, postdoctorate). The minimum duration for research visits is 4-6 months. Visits through the ELLIS and ELISE mobility programs are also welcome.
- Multiple positions in AI Science Communication and Outreach: The lab collaborates with the non-profit organization KI macht Schule to bring current AI topics into schools in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. We are currently looking for cloud software engineer, teaching material editor, and course tutors. Alternatively, it is possible to join our 100+ team of volunteers at all levels. Please reach out if you are interested!

Past Students
I was very fortunate to work with a lot of amazing Master’s students prior to starting my group, in particular:
- Célia Benquet joined the Mathis lab as a Scientific Assistant in autumn 2022, and works on new features and the first open-source release of the CEBRA software package.
- Anastasiia Filippova joined the Mathis lab as a Master’s student in 2022 and works on new extensions and functionalities for self-supervised pre-training on neural and behavioral data.
- Jin Hwa Lee (now PhD student at UCL) joined the Bethge & Mathis labs for a summer internship in August 2020, and continued working in the Mathis lab as a Master’s thesis student and research assistant on self-supervised representation learning for neural data analysis [Paper].
- Shubham Krishna (now ML Engineer at ML6) started as a research assistant in the Bethge lab in April 2020. Shubham works on topics around invariant representation learning and is currently doing a Master’s thesis with Bosch AI [Paper].
- Mert Yüksekgönül (now PhD student in Stanford). Mert worked on 3D lifting approaches for analyzing behavioral data.
- Khushdeep Singh (now Research Engineer at INRIA) joined the Bethge lab as a Master thesis student in April 2020. Khushdeep worked on benchmarking and improving the robustness of reinforcement learning algorithms with self-supervised learning. [Paper]
- Xingying Chen was a summer intern in the Bethge & Mathis labs from August - November 2020, modeling adaptation paradigms in neuroscience using reinforcement learning.
- Jan Hansen-Palmus from the Bringmann group at Uni Tübingen was co-advised by Evgenia Rusak and me.
He wrote his Bachelor’s thesis on constrained optimization approaches for pseudo-labeling.
